Project Haiti is a group of students and faculty advisors from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (UTHSCSA) who have partnered with Project Medishare, a registered 501.3 non-profit organization. Its mission includes sharing medical resources in a partnership with the Haitian community to improve health care and standard of living in and around the rural areas of the central plateau of Thomonde, Haiti. Project Medishare has adopted a philosophy of community-ownership of health care-related relief, and has therefore sought to develop indigenous leadership to make all local operations completely Haitian-run.

The medical students at UTHSCSA formed a chapter for Project Medishare to assist in this mission through student-organized medical trips. Dr. Ruth Berggren, their faculty adviser, and nine MSI and MSII students traveled to Thomonde, Haiti in December 2008 for the first UTHSCSA Haiti mobile clinic trip. In four days of clinics, the students and physicians screened over 600 patients, including 10 with acute limb or life-threatening illnesses.

Besides annual trips focused on delivering health care through mobile clinics, the students of Project Haiti are committed to finding sustainable solutions for the variety of physical, social, and health ailments in the central plateau. We encourage you to explore our different pages to learn more about our fund-raising efforts, on-going projects, ideas, and dreams. Please partner with us in providing hope for Haiti.
